Below is an explanatory article regarding REACH.

Did you know that materials in electronic devices may contain "chemical substances requiring notification"?

The REACH regulation is a system for the registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction of chemical substances in the EU, mandating the management and reporting of target substances.

The REACH regulation is a strict law requiring that "contained chemical substances are safe" when products are circulated in the EU. This article provides an overview of the "REACH regulation" and key points for managing contained substance information.

If you want to check chemical substances contained in plastic components and additives

Plastics and additives used in electronic components, cables, and resin casings contain many chemical substances. Under REACH regulations, if substances of very high concern (SVHC) exceed 0.1% of these chemical substances, an obligation to provide information or notify arises.

Scope of regulation: What are SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern)?

SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) are chemical substances considered to have the following properties. This SVHC list is regularly updated by the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) in the EU, and as of 2025, over 240 substances are registered.

  • Carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction
  • Persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) or very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB)
  • Other substances of equivalent concern

Required actions if SVHCs are included

If products containing SVHCs exceeding 0.1% by weight are to be shipped to the EU, the following actions are required. This necessitates evaluation not only of finished products but also of components and materials, making information sharing across the entire supply chain essential.

  • Obligation to provide information to business partners (e.g., safe handling instructions)
  • Obligation to notify ECHA (if the target substance is present in quantities exceeding 1 tonne per year)

REACH compliance leads to environmental initiatives and enhanced corporate value

REACH compliance not only ensures legal adherence but also enhances brand value as an environmentally conscious company. Additionally, submission of REACH questionnaires and SVHC non-inclusion certificates may be required as a condition for transactions with global companies.

Summary · Summary

  • REACH regulation is a comprehensive legal framework for chemical substance management in the EU market
  • Information provision and notification are required if SVHC exceeds 0.1%
  • ECHA regularly updates the SVHC list, requiring continuous adherence to the latest list
  • An initiative that leads to earning trust as an environmentally conscious company and expanding business
