What is Expandable Sleeving?
Differences from Heat Shrink Tubing and How to Choose by Application

Conclusion: Expandable sleeving, with its PET braided structure, expands and contracts without heat, making it ideal for post-installation and harsh environments.

Differences between Expandable Sleeving and Heat Shrink Tubing Thumbnail comparing the structures of expandable sleeving (PET braided) and heat shrink tubing Expandable Sleeving (PET Braided) No heat required, post-installable, highly durable VS 🔥 Heat Shrink Tubing Shrinks with heat, seals, waterproof HOW TO CHOOSE Differences between Expandable Sleeving and Heat Shrink Tubing | How to Choose by Application

When you search for "expandable sleeving", you often find a lot of information about "heat shrink tubing", but these two products are completely different. Expandable sleeving is made of braided PET material, which expands and contracts without heat, allowing cables to be inserted afterwards. This article explains the differences between the two, as well as the reasons why expandable sleeving is chosen and its applications.

Differences Between Expandable Sleeving and Heat Shrink Tubing

Although similar in name, their materials, structures, and uses are fundamentally different.

Expandable Sleeving (Braided Sleeving) Heat Shrink Tubing
Material PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) Polyolefin, PVC, etc.
Structure Braided mesh structure Extruded cylindrical shape
Contraction/Expansion Mechanism Expands and contracts at room temperature (no heat required) Shrinks with heat (heat required)
Post-installation Possible (just push in from the end) Generally not possible
Sealing/Waterproofing Low (gaps due to mesh structure) High (tight fit after shrinking)
Durability/Abrasion Resistance High (strength of PET fibers) Depends on material
Flame Retardancy UL certified products available UL certified products available
Main Applications Wire protection, harness bundling, outdoor use Termination, insulation, waterproofing

Basic distinction: Heat shrink tubing is suitable for sealing and insulating terminals, while expandable sleeving is suitable for wire protection, bundling, and post-installation.

5 Reasons Why PET Material is Chosen

There are reasons why expandable sleeving (PET braided sleeving) is chosen over PVC and other protective materials in harsh environments.

① Lightweight, flexible, and easy to process harnesses

Lighter and more flexible than PVC tubing, making it easy to bend and conform to complex wiring routes. Easy to install on harnesses after assembly.

② High durability and abrasion resistance

The tensile strength of PET fibers exceeds that of PVC. It can withstand long-term use in machinery with high vibration and friction, as well as in vehicle wiring.

③ High weather resistance for outdoor use

Strong against UV degradation, it is also used for wiring protection in outdoor equipment and solar power installations.

④ Low friction coefficient makes it easy to pass wires

It has a slippery property against PVC-sheathed cables, making it easy to insert and remove wires from the tubing. This is particularly advantageous for post-installation on existing wiring.

⑤ Flame retardant (UL certified products available)

If you choose UL-compliant products, they can be used for wiring inside electrical equipment where flame retardancy standards are required.

Chosen for These Applications

Application/Environment Why Expandable Sleeving is Chosen
Automotive harnesses Strong against vibration and friction, post-installable, lightweight
Industrial machinery wire bundling Durability, easy to attach/detach for maintenance
Outdoor installed equipment Weather resistant, UV resistant for long-term stability
Protection of harnesses with connectors Can be inserted afterwards without removing connectors
Wiring requiring color identification Available in 9 colors for color-coded wire management
High-temperature environments/requiring flame retardancy UL certified products meet safety standards

Points for Choosing

Even within PET braided expandable sleeving, there are different types to suit various applications. Please choose based on the following 4 points.

Is post-installation required?

If you want to insert it after connectors or terminals have been attached, choose a split-type or hook-and-loop (Velcro) type for post-installation. Standard tubular types require threading from the end.

Is color identification needed?

If wire identification and management are required, products available in 9 colors (FLC) are suitable. You can choose from black, white, red, blue, yellow, green, gray, orange, and natural.

Is abrasion resistance and fraying resistance required?

In environments with high vibration and friction, choose abrasion-resistant types or fray-resistant types. Types that do not require terminal treatment can reduce installation man-hours.

Is flame retardancy/UL standard required?

For wiring inside electrical equipment or environments requiring flame retardancy standards, choose UL-compliant products (FL series).
